A small powder bathroom can be one of the most challenging spaces to design, but it also offers an opportunity to create a stylish and functional spot that leaves a lasting impression. I like to treat a powder room like a jewelry box. It’s a great room to go all out decorating without committing your whole home to a significant pattern or color.

With clever design choices, you can transform even the tiniest bathroom into a stunning space that will make you smile whenever you enter. Here are ten ideas to help you make a big impact in your small powder room.

1. Floating Shelves

Incorporating floating shelves can significantly ehance the storage capabilities of a small powder room.  These shelves provide a place to store essentials without occupying valuable floor space. You can also use them to display decorative items or store towels and toiletries.

Floating shelves also contribute to the room’s decor. You can choose from various materials and finishes to complement your overall design theme, whether rustic wood, sleek metal, or glass.

2. Bold Wallpaper

Using bold wallpapers can instantly elevate the look of your powder bathroom. Choose a statement wallpaper to add a dramatic flair. The vibrant patterns draw the eye and make the space more dynamic and engaging.

I worked with a client on a fun powder room in her modern British West Indies-style home. The chosen wallpaper is so bold I decided to pair it with vertical planks; the combination is perfect whimsy as illustrated in my mockup below.

Here’s a list of some of my very favorite coastal wallpapers. The intricate designs provide depth and interest, ensuring that the small space doesn’t feel flat or dull.

Here are some of my favorite designer choices that I recommend a professional install: Les Touches, Feather Bloom Sisal, Oiseaux Et Fleurs, and Savuti (the choice I used above). Here’s a great place to see tons of designer options.

3. Artistic Tile Designs

Tiles can transform the look of a powder room, mainly when used creatively. Consider using mosaic tiles on the floor or as a backsplash to add a touch of artistry. I’m not talking about any old mosaic tile but exceptional designs you can’t get at your local hardware store.

Patterns and textures in tiles can make the small space feel more dynamic and exciting.

For a bolder approach, opt for encaustic cement tiles with intricate designs. These tiles can serve as the primary visual element in the room, turning your powder bathroom into a standout feature of your home. If you go this route, use this tile on the floor and make it the only pattern. I prefer this application in a laundry room or mudroom. I like my powder rooms to be more memorable.

4. Statement Lighting

Lighting is crucial in any bathroom, and a small powder room is no exception. Consider installing an elegant light fixture like this sconce to add function and style. Proper lighting can highlight key features and make the room appear larger (backlight a mirror).

For a more modern touch, these can serve as a focal point. These sparkling lights reflect off walls and mirrors, enhancing the overall brightness and adding a touch of luxury to your tiny space.

5. Unique Mirrors

Mirrors are essential in small bathrooms, as they reflect light and create the illusion of more space. A pretty mirror like this scalloped version can make your powder room feel more spacious and stylish. The unique frame adds a decorative element that complements the room’s overall design.

Alternatively, a contemporary mirror with clean lines, like this option, can give your bathroom a modern edge. It’s simple yet effective in enhancing the room’s aesthetic and making it feel more open.

And this pretty coastal option adds texture.

6. Compact Sinks

Choosing the right sink is vital in a small powder room. Opt for a compact, wall-mounted sink like this sleek model to save floor space while maintaining functionality. Wall-mounted sinks streamline the look and make the floor area appear less cluttered.

While pedestal sinks are considered to be a fine option, I personally prefer something with a little more design to it. I love a compact console sink for a great alternative. It offers a classic look that can suit various design styles without taking up too much space. Look for models that provide a storage shelf underneath to maximize utility.

If you prefer a vessel sink, make it compact with a low profile like this and this.

7. Creative color Palettes

Your color palette can significantly influence how spacious your powder room feels. Light colors make a space feel larger, so consider whites, pastels, or soft neutrals for your walls and fixtures. These hues reflect light and brighten the room.

However, don’t shy away from dark colors, either. Dark walls can create a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Pair them with metallic accents and bright white fixtures to avoid making the room feel too closed.

There are so many color palettes to choose from – from coastal blues to soft corals to browns and greens. These colors can add depth and a sense of calm to your powder room. Consider using shades of the same color for a monochromatic look or mix and match complementary hues for a more dynamic palette.

8. Greenery and natural Elements

Adding plants to your powder room can bring a refreshing touch of nature. Small potted plants or hanging planters can add life and color to the space without overwhelming it. Plants like succulents or ferns thrive in bathroom environments due to the humidity.

Natural elements like stone or wood accents can enhance the room’s aesthetic. Consider a wooden countertop or stone sink to introduce these elements subtly yet impactfully.

9. Storage

In small spaces, every piece of furniture should serve multiple purposes. Look for vanities with built-in storage. This helps keep the space organized and free of clutter.

An armoire or cabinet provides a place to store hand towels, extra toilet paper, cleaning supplies, or other necessities, keeping them out of sight but easily accessible.

10. Personal Touches

Finally, don’t forget to add personal touches to make the space your own. Artwork, photographs, or decorative items that reflect your style can personalize the powder room. These elements ensure the room feels welcoming and uniquely yours.

Personal touches also make the space more inviting for guests. A well-decorated powder room can leave a lasting impression and be a conversation starter when hosting visitors.
