Hey there, design aficionados!

Darlene here, your friendly neighborhood design enthusiast from the salty shores of Fernandina Beach. I’m all about transforming houses into homes that feel as good as they look.

Today, I’m spilling the beans on some of my favorite interior design hacks. These tips will not only save you money and time but also give your home a unique, designer-worthy edge. So, grab your favorite iced tea and let’s dive in!

1. Layered Rugs

Who doesn’t love the feeling of sinking their toes into a soft, plush rug? But why settle for just one when you can have a whole rug party? Layering rugs is a fantastic way to add warmth, texture, and personality to your space, especially in coastal homes where that cozy, eclectic vibe is everything.

PRO TIP: Start with a natural fiber rug as your base layer – think sisal or seagrass. Then, layer on a smaller patterned rug for a pop of color and style. Just make sure the bottom layer is larger to create a visually balanced look. (P.S. If you’re layering over carpet, make sure it’s low-pile or smooth so your top rug doesn’t slip and slide.)

2. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

We all love those beachy vibes with tons of natural light pouring in. But what if your home isn’t blessed with giant windows? No problem! Mirrors are your secret weapon. A well-placed mirror can bounce light around, making your space feel brighter and more open.

PRO TIP: While floor-to-ceiling mirror walls might be a bit dated, they can be done right in smaller spaces like condos. The trick is to skip the trim for a seamless, modern look.

3. The Floor Flow Illusion

Ever noticed how some homes just feel bigger than others, even if they’re the same square footage? The secret often lies in the flooring. Using the same flooring material throughout your home creates a continuous flow, tricking the eye into perceiving more space.

PRO TIP: Take this trick to the next level in your bathroom by using the same tile on the floor and in the shower.Just make sure it’s slip-resistant to avoid any mishaps!

4. Statement Ceilings

We tend to focus so much on walls and floors, but ceilings deserve some love too! A statement ceiling can add so much personality and visual interest to your space. In a coastal home, I’m particularly fond of paneled ceilings – think shiplap for that quintessential beachy feel.

PRO TIP: If you’re not ready for a full ceiling makeover, try painting or wallpapering a smaller section, like a tray ceiling or a nook.

5. DIY Built-In Magic

Custom built-ins are gorgeous, but they can also be pricey. The good news is, you can totally fake the look with some clever DIY skills. Combine pre-made bookshelves with molding for a high-end look at a fraction of the cost. (There are tons of IKEA hacks online that can help you get started!)

PRO TIP: Get creative with the finish! You can paint your DIY built-ins to match your walls for a seamless look or choose a contrasting color to make them pop.
